If we see that it works, why aren't we doing it???

Learning in Today's World

I am curious when I see a video like the one above, why aren't we teaching more like this?  If we see something that works, that our students enjoy and are engaged in, why don't we do more?  I am not saying there is no project based learning being done, but is there enough?  Why isn't there more?

I am very interested in student engagement and what that looks like in the 21st century.  I find Project Based Learning is an excellent example of how we can engage our 21st century learners.
Students need to be engaged in order to have meaningful learning.  Students need real life experiences, they need to make connections.

I do understand that creating projects and engaging learning environments takes a lot of time and work.  I also realize that the learning that takes place is so worth the time and effort put in to creating such a rich learning environment.

Project based learning allows ALL learners to experience meaningful learning and make real life connections.  It is what our students want and need.

  1. Very cool video Lisa. Wouldn't it be great if there were more classrooms like this?! This video reminds me of the readings on Constructivist Learning Goals - developing life-long learners. This classroom does it.

I like the student who said, "I hate writing, but I like learning". Seeing these kids flourish in this environment is energizing!

  2. What an empowering video... I'm all charged up! :-) It is frustrating sometimes, isn't it, to see things that work so very well, and wonder why we have been so slow to adopt them more deliberately and fully in school systems. Maybe that's part of it -- we're talking about school "systems" and systemic change is tricky, political, complex, and ultimately threatening to those whose mission is to preserve the systems!

By the way, if you're interested in this kind of change, you might want to look into the AECT Division for Systemic Change. AECT is the Association for Educational Communications and Technology, a large and influential professional organization for Educational Technologists. This is an international organization, but primarily American, and its counterpart in Canada is CNIE (the Canadian Network for Innovation in Education).
